Answer Douglas C-47 was the primary troop carrier for airborne assaults. Paratroopers were also carried in the Waco CG-4A Glider. Some paratroopers were trained as glider assault troops. It could carry 13 troops. For small, clandestine operations, any small aircraft could be used to drop 1 or 2 parachutists behind enemy lines. The British used the Lysander.
The D.H.4, Short Bomber , Voisin VIII, Caudron R.11, Caproni Ca.3, Caproni Ca.5, Sikorsky's Ilya Mourometz, and the AEG G.IV, Gotha G.IV. They were all smaller planes.
