Appeasement
Great Britain and France.
Policy of appeasement.
The policy was very widely supported in Britain and France. It is, however, associated with Neville Chamberlain, who was Prime Minister of Britain from 1937 to 1940. In practice, he inherited a very difficult situation from his predecessor, Stanley Baldwin.
Britain and France used appeasement in an effort to avoid a second war. They gave in to Hitler's demands if he gave them something in return, namely promising to end his conquest. No matter how shocking this is, most people thought Hitler was harmless at the time and kept an eye on Mussolini in Italy.
The policy of appeasement was not an actual policy, rather a strategy adopted by Britain and France during the 1930's to try and lower Hitler's aggressiveness. Ultimately it was a factor in causing World War 2
