Literacy tests
White Southerners would disenfranchise Blacks with literacy tests.

typically they were illiterate because they didn't have access to education and were unable to pass a literacy test. ^^^^ sometimes the case, but the people who gave the test made the standerd for the literacy tests incredibly high for blacks. it made it nearly impossible for the blacks to vote.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was legislation that outlawed discrimination against blacks and women. Racial segregation was also outlawed in this piece of legislation. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a piece of legislation that outlawed discriminatory voting practices against African-Americans.
They were used to prevent African-Americans from voting.
From the 1890s to the 1960s the United States government administered literacy tests to immigrants, freed blacks, and poor whites. The practice was put in place to weed out those deemed illiterate and therefore ineligible to vote.
Literacy tests were abolished officially in 1965.
The 15th amendment granted every citizen the right to vote. This right was abridged by imposing poll taxes blacks often couldn't afford and requiring "literacy" tests which were rigged to prevent blacks from passing while whites were exempted from the tests.
The literacy tests were designed to prevent voting by the majority of freed slaves and their descendants, in order to prevent them from influencing local elections where they represented a substantial number of the populace. These laws ultimately affected the succeeding generations and were eventually removed as unconstitutional.
