There were army nurses in the first world war, and during the second world war, an auxiliary service called the Women's Army Corps was created. Back then, the jobs were very restricted, since it was believed that young women were not suited for the more difficult or dangerous jobs. Other than being an Army nurses, women seldom were permitted to enter into any of the responsible jobs, and were mainly encouraged to do office work. As a result, few if any women were eligible to rise up in the chain of command.
But that has changed in modern times. Today, young women in the army have many career paths open to them; while some still do clerical work, many others become medics, mechanics, or even pilots. There are some women drill sergeants, and some women who have reached the rank of general. And while women used to be excluded from combat, some women do in fact go on dangerous missions into hostile territory. If you ask your military recruiter, he or she will be able to tell you which occupations are available and what training you will need.
