"Love Me Do" b/w "PS I Love You" reached #17 on the UK music charts, in the fall of 1962 - but only for one week, then it vanished completely, leading to suspicions of foul play.
It turned out Beatles manager Brian Epstein had personally bought 10,000 copies, having been told that it took that many record sales to have a Top Twenty hit. Epstein didn't realize that this meant 10,000 copies every week; the fiasco briefly hurt the band's reputation, but Epstein learned from his mistake.
The next Beatles single, "Please Please Me" b/w "Ask Me Why" was a legitimate hit, reaching #1 in most UK charts.

The Beatles _________ I'd tend to agree the Beatles, because their impact was wider (and slightly earlier) and because they popularised the new production techniques of the later 1960s. The early Stones however had arguably a greater impact on "alternative" rock through their influence on the emerging US garage scene which in turn fed into 1970s punk and some of its offspring, feeding into later stripped-down underground "edgy", "angular" sounds and the rebel attitudes that often accompany them.
In England, their native homeland, it was the album Please Please Me. In the USA it was "Meet The Beatles" which was pieced together from album tracks from Please Please Me, With The Beatles, and some of their singles.
