Religion played a very significant role in the lives of Puritans living in the Massachusetts Bay colony. They were all expected to attend church services twice on Sundays, as well as lead godly lives every day of the week. Emphasis was put on how one lived and how one died; after death, the person's funeral service included evaluations of his or her life.
The original settlers of Massachusetts were Christians from a denomination called the Puritans. They believed their duty was to purify both society and Christianity, by setting an example of how to live a God-centered life. Puritans were very observant in their faith (some non-Puritans found them to be strict and unforgiving); but on the positive side, they were great believers in education, and made sure both boys and girls received schooling, so that they would be able to read and understand the Scriptures.
The Puritans were practicing Christians. They rejected the reformation of the Church of England. A lot of their views come from a Calvanistic approach to The Bible.

In 1630 John Winthrop led a group of Puritans to settle the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Winthrop hoped their settlement would be an example of Christian living. In a sermon, he said,"...We shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us..."
In the Puritan-founded colony of Massachusetts Bay, religious freedom was not encouraged in any typical 21st century sense. For the Puritans, the freedom that they enjoyed to practice their religious faith was restricted to their religious faith. Living, working, and worshipping together as a unified community, these settlers viewed "freedom" strictly in terms of the "true faith" which they alone practiced; thus, religious views were strictly monitored and enforced throughout the newly-founded community.
