There are four major rivers which originate or headwater in the Colorado mountains. They include the Platte River which drains most of northeastern Colorado from three major forks. Futher south, the Arkansas River headwaters at Fremont Pass northeast of Leadville. West of the Arkansas, the Rio Grande River headwaters above the town of Del Norte on the eastern slope of Wolf Creek Pass. These three rivers are all on the eastern slope and drain to the Gulf of Mexico. The fourth major river is of course the Colorado River which headwaters above Grand Lake near Granby, CO and is the only major river which lies on the western slope. It drains to the Pacific, entering the Gulf of California (formerly the Sea of Cortez) at the intersection of the Baja Peninsula and the mainalnd of Mexico.

The Platte River which drains northeast to its confluence with the Missouri River which then drains to the Mississippi. Then The Arkansas River and the Rio Grande River. They all flow east and drain to the Gulf of Mexico in the Atlantic watershed. cosparkaz@gmail.com
