There was a very similar tale with a Male background- main characters male- motives somewhat different called ( The Overcoat) By O.Henry- possibly other writers, after a herculean search the missing coat was found- already some differences in the plot- the typical O.Henry snap ending- ( All of the Money was Confederate!) and the finder keeled over from a heart attack. ( int he superman plot adaptation all ended happily as there was a ( paralell bank account) In Federal currency. still a morbid angle. I got the drift that both authors had Communistic leanings. POut not your trust in Money, it might be Confederate!

The story explores themes of pride, deception, and the consequences of vanity.
previous answer: It is a short story about someone that pays a huge price for something that is worthless.
My answer:
It is a story about a woman who is unhappy with her life and station, as to wealth and society. She pretends to be wealthy by using all the money her husband had to buy a dress for a high-society dance. She then scoffs at wearing flowers and borrows a fake diamond necklace, not knowing it is a fake. She loses the necklace after the dance and she and her husband pay it off for ten years, after which she learns that it was not real.
A good short story to compare to "The Necklace" would be "The Monkey s Paw." Both the conflicts in these stories were brought upon by the greed of the main character s greed. In fact, I had to write a paper comparing these two stories.
Another story is 'Paste' by Henry James. That story is said to have been inspired by 'The Necklace.'
On one level it's telling us to be satisfied with what we have, or at least see that there are aspects of value in life outside of status and wealth. It's a cautionary tale about capitalism, especially its cultural effect on some women.
