If the person renting the upstairs from you is an elderly person or not in good health, they may worry or feel insecure when they know they are alone. If so, then before leaving your house, you could tell them that you are going to be out for a while, and will be back later. If she asks where you are going just tell her that you respect her privacy and prefer to maintain your privacy as well. However, you are right to feel concerned for your privacy. Not to be overly cynical, but your tenant's kindness and apparent amity could be a ruse to lull you into a false sense of security. Knowing your whereabouts and how long you might be out of the house is just the sort of information you wouldn't want a stranger -- or a tenant who has a burglar for a boyfriend -- to know.
