Answer Depends on where he is going to be working.

A general knowledge of Microsoft products is always useful. There may be a CAD/CAM system that is used by the firm he is working for. Skill at using email is also important.

1)MS Projects, Primavera-for planning & Scheduling.

2)STAAD-PRO, NISA, E-Tab, SAP R3 -For structure designing

3)AutoCAD, LandDesk Development- For mapping

In the UK the following software suites or programs are commonly used in geotechnical or structural design, site investigation reporting or contaminated land remediation:

  1. The Oasys suite of software is very widely used in both geotechnical and structural engineering (Oasys is the software house of Ove Arup Associates).
  2. The LUSAS Civil & Structural suite has also been used in the UK for structural analysis.
  3. FLAC and FLAC3D - Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua are two-dimensional and three-dimensional continuum / dis-continuum finite difference codes used in the modelling of geotechnical, rock mechanics and mining problems in both industry and academia (distributed in the UK by Mott MacDonald and developed by the US company HC Itasca).
  4. PLAXIS - A continuum finite element code used in geotechnical modelling in industry and academia.
  5. The Geostudio suite of software is also used in the modelling of geotechnical engineering problems in the UK.
  6. ConSim is a software package used for assessing the risk posed to groundwater by contaminated land sites due to contaminant leaching and was developed by Golder Associates on behalf of the UK Environment Agency.
  7. CLEA - Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment. Software developed by the Environment Agency for use in the assessment of risk to humans posed by contaminated land.
  8. gINT ("gEOTECHNICAL INTegrator") is a database and plotting program used for the creation of borehole logs, geological cross sections and the reporting of other geotechnical, geoenvironmental and site investigation data.
  9. Frost 3D Universal is a software package for thermal analysis in ground considering its thawing/freezing and could be used in construction engineering either in north (like Alaska, Canada) regions or for artificial ground freezing.

Who should perform the validation test-the software developer or the software user?

Neither, it should be performed by a qualified Software Tester and witnessed by a Software Quality Engineer, a Systems Engineer, and the customer/user representative. The Software Developer should be entirely out of the picture at this point and only be responsible for fixing bugs found during validation.

Can't Be Afraid of Change?

Software test engineer jobs are best geared towards the engineer who loves building off of the ideas of another. As testing of software usually occurs during the entire process, the software test engineer must at times be able to provide accurate estimates based on incomplete information. A software test engineer will have to keep detailed reports of sessions, writing down all bugs in reports, and sometimes must come up with the procedures by which to test the product. As this will often require a re configuration of software and operating systems, the software test engineer must have detailed knowledge of whatever software and operating systems are being used. The software test engineer will also be expected to provide his or her expertise on these re configured systems.

Is a software engineer someone who fixes things before they are broken?

If in the sense that the engineer manages to weed out all bugs and write something that works flawlessly before the product is released, then yes, it would be ideal for a software engineer to be so. However, although many problems are fixed during software development, there can be problems that slipped by in the final released version.
