It was eliptical(resembling a stadium) many tiered building constructed out of a limestone facade and brick sub structure capable of holding 50,000 spectators. It's approximate dimensions were 564'x468' feet on the outside and 258'x162' on the inside,it was 147' feet high, Travertine was also used in construction( a type of marble). Earthquakes and man have lead to it's present day appearance,it was used as a stone quarry for 250 yrs..Many Roman buildings don't exist today because many were originally pagan and were also easy to pull down with the aid of oxen. All one has to do is look around the world and were one see's marble columns and stone facades, be it a stately mansion or government building, one could surmise this is a 'recycled' roman building.Only Michelangelo and Da Vinci had the talent that the ancients possessed with regards to stoneworking. St. Peters basilica was constructed out of parts of the colosseum as well as the pantheon(another roman building).
1st off spell colosseum right and it looked put together :D
