In America, college professors with a doctorate should be called "Doctor Smith" where "Smith" is the last name. Those without a doctorate may be called "Professor Smith".
The credentials of each teacher can usually be found in the course catalog, and the preferred term of address can usually be found on the course syllabus. Obviously, any professor who states another preference (e.g.: "Please, call me Joe.") should be called by that instead.
