Abraham Lincoln was a bad president. He used the blacks and slavery as an excuse to punish the south. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the Confederate states. He broke treaties he had with the Souix indians. He also didnt follow the constitution.
Out of all of the many important actions and words for which Abraham Lincoln is responsible, the most important thing is his emancipation of America's slaves. By formal proclamation in 1863, then in practical effect in 1865 with the South finally defeated, Lincoln can be said to have done more than any other Northerner to establish freedom and equality in America such as had never been enjoyed before.
He was the 16th President of the United States and elected to two terms. He won his first term as the Democrats had split 3 ways. Thus Lincoln was elected because of a disunited Democratic Party.
He led the country through one of the worst periods in US history; the Civil War. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to help the Union win the Civil War and thus preserve the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the states which had rebelled against the Union, thus, at the time it was written, the Union did not have control over the states, which had seceded or rebelled against the Union. The Union states were "free states" as the Northern states (divided between Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the Western Territory had outlawed slavery. The rebel states or Confederate states did surrender to the Union, and became "free states" by virtue of the Emancipation Proclamation. Thus, Lincoln was successful in bringing the United States together, again, as one nation.
Six days after the end of the Civil War, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre, in Washington DC, by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Southern sympathizer. Lincoln died the next morning, April 15, 1865.
He also served one term as a Whig Congressman and became nationally known for the debates he engaged in with Stephen Douglas when he ran for the US Senate in 1858. He was a clever speaker; his speeches and sample of his humor are still in print.
Lincoln supported the Homestead Act, which allowed poor people in the east take land in the west. He lead as example and influences many later presidents. He signed the Morrill Act which was designed to aid in the establishment of agricultural and mechanical colleges in each state.
Abraham Lincoln was a storyteller. He told many dirty stories. The early writers of Lincoln found the stories too dirty to print. Those stories have been lost.
James Gentry hired Abraham Lincoln and his son Allen Gentry to take a load of salted hams and other merchandise by flatboat to New Orleans to sell. On the trip, Abraham was able sell some of the merchandise along the way. He took in some counterfeit money. Instead of taking the loss, Abraham decided to pass the counterfeit money off to unsuspecting people.
Two friends went along on his second trip to New Orleans, John Hanks and Denton Offutt. Along the way Offutt decided to buy some hogs. The hogs were wild and refused to cooperate. Abraham had the idea to sew their eye shut. Abe held their heads, and John their tails, while Offutt sewed their eye lids shut. The hogs were easy to handle after that.
Two friends of Abraham Lincoln were just married. Abraham arranged to have each man go to the other mans bedroom while the newlywed gals were already in bed. Each man climbed into the bed with the wife of the other man. Neither couple thought it was funny.
When Abraham was in his early thirties or late twenties, while traveling, he was able to stop over at some friends. The couple had two almost grown daughters. The family had three beds. The girl's beds were arranged next to each other so that the foot of one bed was touching the head of the other. The girls were going to sleep in one bed and Abraham was going sleep in the other with his head at the foot of the other bed. One of the girls decided it would be fun to rest her foot on Abraham's head. Instead of throwing her leg off, he reached up and stroked her leg. The girl found this pleasurable. Abraham was stroking the inside of her leg and thigh. The girl seemed to be enjoying it. When Abraham reached too high, the girl bolted and ran to her mother to tell on Abraham. The mother told the girl to calm down so that she would not wake her father. She said that he might kill Abraham. Abraham decided it was time to leave, and left.
You would have to look hard to find any undisputably bad thing that Lincoln did.
You can second guess him and perhaps find something unwise that he said or did, but , I think, even that would be hard and subject to reasonable dispute. I do not claim that Lincoln was perfect, I am only saying that he lived a clean life and did not do any evil deeds that I know of.
No. He was the most capable President the Americans ever had.
