They are used for all manner of purposes in all manner of technical fields. Opaque objects can be viewed by illuminating them from above. One type is known as polarising microscope because it has filters that polarise the light passing through a transparent specimen, in order to analyse the specimen's structure by its effect on the polarising. These are particularly used in geology to identify and analyse crystalline rocks (the specimen is ground and polished thin enough to pass light).
