During the Vietnam War US Army & US Marine Corps tank battalions consisted of about 57 M48A3 Patton tanks (sometimes 58 tanks). The M48 Patton was technically called the M48 90mm Gun Tank. 3 line companies of 17 Pattons per company, 3 platoons consisting of 5 Pattons per platoon. The remaining 2 tanks were in Headquarters Platoon (the captain & XO's tanks). The remaining 6 or 7 Pattons were in HHC company (Headquarters and Headquarters Company).

That took care of the tanks, then there were M113 Scout vehicles (Armored Personnel Carriers/Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles), M125 Mortar Tracks, Medic Tracks, Maintenance Tracks, all being modified M113s. Plus about four M88 VTR (Vehicle Tracked Retrievers), and 1/4 tons (jeeps). ALL OF THESE WERE IN HHC company. The whole tank battalion consisted of about 600 men; less than half of whom were tank crewmen.

Do tank battalions have JUST tanks?

How many silver star winners were in the battle of the bulge?

No. Neither is there any overall list of all who were awarded the Medal. Division commanders had the authority to award the Silver Star; higher awards had to be approved by higher authority. Many divisions and some regiments published unit histories immediately after the war, and these often include lists of unit members who were decorated. There were a lot of smaller "independent" battalions of various types which were not a part of any larger formation, and these, being so small, usually did not publish a history. Many times these independent battalions were attached, more or less permanently, to a particular division, and MIGHT be included in that division's history, if it published one. All the tank battalions (numbered in the 700s), all the tank destroyer battalions, all the anti-aircraft artillery were independent battalions. There were three or four independent battalions of combat engineers who turned in heroic performances during the Bulge.

Was the 863 battalion in the battle of the buldge?

There was the 863rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion (Automatic Weapons), which was among the "corps troops" of the V Corps, US First Army, which was in the Battle of the Bulge. The US Army had, besides its divisions, hundreds of "independent battalions" of various types, which were "independent" because they were not a permanent part of any larger formation. These battalions were assigned to corps HQs (where they were referred to as "corps troops") or field army HQs (where they were referred to as "army troops"). These included artillery of several calibers, signals, combat engineers, tank, tank destroyer battalions, and so on. All AAA battalions were "separate" or "independent" battalions. If you want to search the net include among your search terms "863rd AAA (AW) Bn". I've included a link below, under "Related Links" which is an "Order of Battle" (a list of all units involved) for the Bulge.

How can you find the battle history of your uncle an-anti tank driver during WW II in Europe?

Please identify the unit. That might help. First, I have to assume you refer to US Army. Your reference to "anti-tank driver" could mean he served with either a Tank Destroyer Battalion or maybe Tank Battalion. Maybe you refer to an Anti-Tank Company which was a light field gun used to knock out tanks and was part of every infantry division.I will assume you mean a US Tank Destroyer Battalion.Generally, the history books seldom mention the Tank Destroyer Battalions. You can start by identifying the theater that the unit served in. Then find the volume of the US Army History series that covers that campaign and check the index. These volumes can be found in many libraries.Next, try to find out if it was attached to any other unit. Usually the T-D Battalions were independent but attached to an army, corps or an armored or infantry division. If you find one, then locate the unit history for that armored or infantry division and see if it mentions the T-D Battalion. If you follow the history of the parent unit then you will learn something about the T-D unit. Some books will mention these "support units" but some are reluctant to give them credit.Lastly, there are some websites for Tank Destroyer Battalions. Search for those. Contact the webmaster and ask for help. Usually they know of other T-D units and can direct you to a good source.Tank Destroyer Battalions that served in Italy:679, 757, 776, 791, 804, 805, 894Tank Battalions that served in Italy:751, 752, 756, 758(Light), 760Website for 752 Tank Battalion:http://www.752ndtank.com/index.HTMLHope that helped.Custermen

Do tank destroyer battalions have the same organization and vehicles as tank battalions?

No. Tank destroyer battalions had three companies, A, B and C, and each had 12 guns. These were self-propelled guns at first, then in 1943 about half the tank destroyer battalions converted to towed guns, which proved to be immobile. So most converted back to self-propelled guns after that. The original self-propelled guns included one model mounted on half-tracks. Eventually several purpose-built self-propelled guns were provided. These were tracked vehicles, with no armor, and a larger gun than those mounted on tanks. The tank destroyers proved to be death traps in their intended role of fighting enemy armor, but gave good service as self-propelled artillery. The army had sixteen armored divisions. Two of these were "heavy", the 2nd and 3rd, retaining an early Table of Organization, which included armored regiments. The other fourteen armored divisions had three tank battalions each, and, in addition, there were seventy-some "independent" tank battalions. These were organized with four companies. A, B and C had medium (Sherman) tanks and D had light (Stuart) tanks. See related link below for an excellent discussion of WWII US armor organization and vehicles, including the tank destroyers.

How many tanks are in a tank division?

During the Vietnam War, a standard US Army "Armor Battalion" (tank battalion) consisted of approximately 57/58 Patton M48A3 tanks. Two or more, but usually three, battalions equalled one brigade. Two or more, but usually three, brigades equalled one division. US Marine Corps tank battalions (in Vietnam) were organized the same as the Army's. Only Army & Marine tank "Battalions" were in Vietnam; as well as armored cavalry squadrons, which were the equivalent of battalions (but contained far more armored vehicles in their troops (companies are called "Troops" in the cavalry). With the one exception of the 11th ACR (Armored Cavalry Regiment) which, in the cavalry is equivalent to a brigade. In Vietnam, the 11th ACR was commanded by COL. George S. Patton, son of WW2 Gen Patton.
