Just prior to his death he was traveling back towards his birthplace, teaching, as usual, along the way. He stopped in Kushingar and ate a dinner with the local blacksmith of pork (yes, the Buddha ate meat, as long as it was not killed specifically for him), unfortunately the pork was tainted and he fell ill and died shortly thereafter. Just prior to his death the Buddha told his attendants to tell the Blacksmith that the meal was not the cause. He then answered whatever reaming questions his disciplines had and then told them: "All composite things pass away. Strive for your own liberation with diligence." and died.
