Economy: Stalin's impact on Russia can be divided into 5 sections, economy, culture, nationality, the outside world and terror. Economically Stalin's impact is one of the most miraculous in history. In a matter of only 13 years, Stalin reformed industry and built Russia into one of the world superpowers. The industrial base created in the 1930's was used to out produce Nazi Germany in key areas. This increase in production was made with the use of 'Five Year Plans' to increase annual production.
Agriculture: Stalin's introduction of collective farms, where he rounded up peasants and put them onto large farms in which they worked for their lives, ensured a steady food supply to all cities and a productive agriculture. This forced collectivization was almost impossible to achieve as quotas were too high in unfertile areas, which sold for low prices and taxed the countryside and land.
Stalin's actions affected the religion, as he was strongly aetheist.
Stalin in world war two led to the destruction of many cities and millions of deaths. Society also learnt to hate POW's as Stalin ordered soldiers never to surrender.
Stalin made Russia powerful. Although he murdered around the same amount of people as Hitler did, he was "a great leader" according to them.
He had a son, Jacob Stalin who was unsuccessful in his suicide attempt in the late 1920's, his father then called him a "weakling." During WWII, Germans took Jacob prisoner but Stalin refused a German offer to exchange his son. He could be called an evil man but some would argue he was "a great leader", as stated above.
Indeed his effect on Russia was great, turning them into a large "superpower" for a time.
Stalin did frighten many people who were afraid to rebel. Still many people "worshiped" him, you could say. They followed him as if he were a god and figured his dream of building a "Utopia" would one day come true. Of course we all know that didn't happen.
Stalin successfully turned Russia from a third-world peasant country to an industrial, military juggernaut with a well educated and skilled working class. Under his rule, the Soviet Union gained massive amounts of territory, the Red Army defeated the invading Nazis and took Berlin, Russia became one of two world superpowers (along with USA), and medicine, health care, and education were advanced greatly.
However, this came at a cost. The rights of Russians and other citizens of the Soviet Union were restricted. Many organized religious leaders (particularly those representing the Catholic Church), artists, and intellectuals were imprisoned and executed. Overall, despite the sacrifices made in Stalin's regime, Russia finally caught up with the modern world and went on to surpass Western Europe and even America in certain ways.
