A:Paul mentions a companion, Luke, who was a physician and the third gospel has traditionally been attributed to him.

However, all the New Testament gospels were originally anonymous and this gospel was not attributed to Paul's companion until the second century, principally because the same author wrote Acts of the Apostles and the Church Fathers thought that it could have been written by a well educated companion of Paul. However, modern New Testament scholars do not believe that this Luke was the real author of the gospel. We know nothing about 'Luke', the author of the gospel, and therefore do not know what his job wass.

A:

The fourth gospel has traditionally been attributed to John, who of course was a disciple of Jesus.

However, the Gospel was written anonymously and was only attributed to John later in the second century. Modern New Testament scholars say the Gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed, which means it could not really have been written by John. As the author of John's Gospel is not actually known, we can not say what the author's job was before he became a gospel writer.

Scholars say that the Gospel of Matthew was written anonymously in the eighties of the first century and only attributed to the disciple whose name it now bears, later in the second century. They say that the Gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events that it portrays, so therefore the author was in fact not the former disciple.

We do not know the name of the author of Matthew, or even where he lived. He was reasonably well educated and knew the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, but was probably not a Jew. Apart from this we do not know what 'Matthew' did before he wrote the Gospel.
