Denis Papin proposed placing paddlewheels, driven by steam, on a boat. However, his concept for how the force of the steam would be converted into mechanical energy was not fully developed, yet. Five years later, he would conceive the idea of applying steam to a piston.

Johann Zahn built a camera obscura that was small enough to be portable. This was a shadow box, which simply projected an inverted image onto glass or paper on the back of the box; it had no means of actually taking a picture.

Lu Antonio Porzo invented the first multiple-stage filter for purifying water.
