Life in colony of New Jersey wasn't hard because they had good farmers.
The New Jersey colony was different from many of the original Thirteen Colonies because there was no conflict with Native Americans, which was a major issue for other colonies. Early on, settlers had formed business partnerships with the natives, and traded for furs. At one point, New Jersey was split with the strict Puritans governing the eastern portion of the colony and a more mild governing style in the western.
The majority of colonists in New Jersey lived in small villages. Homes and businesses were built close by and around a common landmark with shared lands surrounding them. This gave a closer sense of community and was invaluable in the event of an attack by Native American tribes. Education for everyone, including women, was very important. Most in the Middle Colonies had been started by people fleeing religious persecution so to them, religion was essential. It was important to education everyone at least enough to be able to read The Bible. Town meetings kept everyone informed and were the earliest sign of democratic government in America.
