I think horrific and frightening pretty well sum it up. Combat is something which must be experienced truly to be understood. To get some idea though, watch the movies "The Big Red One" and "Saving Private Ryan".Michael Montagne
For an idea what the front lines were like in Europe read CITIZEN SOLDIERS, D Day or Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose. Band of Brothers was also made into an hbo movie that could be purchased on DVD.
For life on Iwo Jima I strongly suggest reading Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley. Flyboys by the same author is also a very good book. These books give a great and some times graphic account of what life was like for these young kids out protecting this great country.
For another perspective, try Frontsoldaten by Stephen G. Fritz available online thru major book retailers. Also, 7000 Kilometers in a Sturmgeschutz by Heinrich Engel (publisher: J. J. Fedorowicz Publishing, Inc).
or watch a really rough porno film and you'll understand
It was really ruff for them. They had to stay guard every second making sure they wouldn't die. The food was filled with bugs. The soldiers would have to go for mile walks/runs in shoes that made their skin shred till it bled. Lastly If they didn't die in combat they could still die of the shortage of food supply, malaria, and disease.
1. Front lines on warships-was the ocean 2. Front lines in the ETO-cities and open fields, and farms 3. Front lines in the CBI-Jungle and forests, and mountains 4. Front lines in the PTO-Islands, tropical/or volcanic rock
the American homefront was under a great crisis during ww2
it was very hard because there was lots of noise.
being on the front line of the trenches is hard work as you have a lot of shooting to do and you have to watch out for enemy ambushes
Life on the European homefront during World War 1 was full of sacrifice and struggle by everyone. Things like food, clothing and gasoline were all rationed and making do was the thing to do. People who were used to having enough of everything were forced to plant gardens and mend their clothes just to get by from day to day.

life was short
Most of the men were gone to fight in the war, so it was up to all the women to manage the slaves and family. After Sherman's march to the sea. It was awful for the inhabitants, being raped and pillaged by the union soldiers.
