According to Gouldner's exchange theory, the social exchange is certain actions and obligations as a repayment of the benefits received. Norm of reciprocity obliges a person to give benefit to those from whom he has received them. It is likely to be found in any and every cultural system. To gouldner people should help those who have helped them and they should not harm or injure those who have helped them. He believes that social stability is in good measure the consequence of the mutual indebtedness of those who live by a norm of reciprocity. The norm of reciprocity requires that if others have been fulfilling their duties to you, you in turn have additional or obligation to fulfill your duties to them

In the 1860 presidential election Abraham Lincoln received 180 electoral votes (59.4), John Breckinridge received 72 electoral votes, John Bell received 39 electoral votes, and Stephen Douglas received 12 electoral votes. John Bell received electoral votes from Virginia (15), Kentucky (12), and Tennessee (12).
