Confederate General Joseph Johnston with about 17,000 men tried to stop and defeat the left wing of Sherman Army near Bentonville SC. on March 19,1865.

The battle was inconclusive and both sides held their ground. Two days later Sherman push forward also his Army's right wing and Johnston, badly overwhelmed, was forced to withdraw.
