The English had just fought a battle against Harold Hardrada and the Vikings so they had lost some men. They also had no rest and were tired after walking across the country.
Some battalions were too slow and had been left behind while others left the army so they could go home.
The English army were not well trained and were mostly farmers unlike the well disciplined Norman army.
