∙ 10y agoA good Roman citizen was considered to be someone who was patriotic and abided by the law. Before the creation of a professional standing army which was joined voluntarily, being a good citizen also involved fighting for Rome in her citizen militia.

∙ 10y agoThe first class of citizens did not have a specific role. It had more voting power than the second, third, fourth and fifth class.
The term first class refers to the Assembly of the Soldiers of the Late Roman Monarchy and the Roman Republic. This assembly was divided into five classes according to the value of the property of the soldiers. The first class was the made up of the most affluent soldiers. All the soldiers in this assembly were peasant-proprietors. The classes were subdivided into 170 centuries which were voting units. The richest men were officers and they had 18 centuries.
The voting system of the Assembly of the Soldiers favoured its richer members. The vote of each century counted for one vote and they voted separately. The vote continued until the majority of votes was reached (97 out of 193). Since the centuries of officers and the higher propertied classes voted first, they carried the vote. The lower classes rarely voted. This assembly voted on war and peace and elected the higher officers of state of the Republic (consuls, praetors and censors)
From the 6th century BC to 107 BC, classes 1 to 3 were the heavy infantry and classes 2 to 5 were the light infantry. With the Marian reforms of 107 BC heavy and light infantry were abolished and all soldiers had the same equipment.
