In good times the nobles did pretty much what they wanted much of the time.

They always had duties to perform, whether formal duties, or such things as military service in emergencies, or administrative duties of government. They were technically responsible for the welfare of their serfs, and though some did not take this seriously, others did.

They were more comfortable than most people, though there were rich people out there who were not members of the nobility, particularly in the Late Middle Ages. They lived in manor houses, for the most part, though a few lived in castles. They had better food, much better furniture, and better clothing than ordinary people. In the Late Middle Ages, and the years leading up to that time, nobles were among the few people having fireplaces and chimneys. Prior to that no one had chimneys, so no one had fireplaces. I guess their lives were pretty primitive by today's standards.

The lifestyles of the nobles of the Middle Ages was not very good. It was cold in the winter and hot in the summer and the castles were quite drafty. However, most nobles had clothes to wear and food to eat and people to serve them. Their lives were much better than the people who lived outside of the castle walls.
