Personal faith in Christ alone. For this, he was castigated by the "mother" church.

The formal title really explains this: "A Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences." The door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg where he nailed what became known as the 95 theses was like the noticeboard for the nearby university. This issue had been troubling Luther for some time, in particular the activities of one Johan Tetzel, who had the slogan 'as soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs.'

Luther sought to explain that a believers life should exhibit true repentance, and that money cannot remit sin, nor buy a persons way to heaven. While Luther's theology had not progressed to its final position in all matters, the beginnings of his evangelical doctrines are here applied to the practice of indulgences which is the subject throughout the 95 theses, with their associated theology.

Because he was mad at the Church for selling indulgences among many other things. Martin used these 95 theses (reasons) to form his own church.

______________________________________________________________ well, MY answer is much shorter. SOme ideas of he wanted to debate were .. THE SELLING OF INDULGENCES, The Bible IS THE ONLY SOURCE OF RELIGIOUS TRUTH, PEOPLE DO NOT NEED THE CLERGY TO INTERPRET THE BIBLE, AND SALVATION CAN BE GAINED ONLY THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST. AND i know its correct because it came from my book lol. At least it helped u-i hope :)

There was not one idea behind the 95 Theses, they are all over the place, although a lot of them deal with what Martin Luther thought as opposed to the over 200 men who had sat on the chair of St. Peter, and thousands of Bishops who had guided the Church for the 15 centuries up until then. They concentrated on forgiveness of sins, penitential canons, the Church's power and authority over the living and the dead, the pope's authority, indulgences, etc. For a complete enumeration, see the list at the link below.
