Even though Brown v Board had outlawed segregation in schools, this did not prevent cities and states from passing and maintaining laws banning racial minorities from public places. The African-American protesters at the sit-in knew that they would get beat up and arrested for sitting at a whites only lunch counter, but they did it anyway so that the world would see how badly they were being treated and support their fight for civil rights.
