You would have to think that the prime motivation was SURVIVAL! They arrived with a minimal amount of materials and had to learn to live off of the land. Planting crops meant having to wait for harvest to get additional food. So they had to learn what vegetation was edible, and had to hunt animals in the forest.

Then there was the shelter requirement. Trees had to be felled to make log homes to live in before the winter snows came.
