The manor had a set of rights between a lord and his serfs. The lord provided his serfs with farmland, protection, and housing. In return serfs farmed the lord's lands, and performed other tasks to maintain the estate. All serfs owed the lord certain duties. That included at least a few days of labor each week and a certain portion of their grain.
In Japan, trusted nobles were given land grants called Shoens by the emperor. Feudalism in Japan adhered to a strict hierarchy. At the top of the pyramid was the emperor, who was considered the divine, and therefore, highest authority. Under the emperor, was the Shogun. Shoguns were responsible for providing the military. Beneath the Shogun was the Daimyo, who managed the Shogun's lands. Next were the warrior class, or Samurai, who acted as the defenders of the feudal state. Next came the merchants and artisans, who produced finished products for sale. At the bottom of the hierarchy were the peasants, who through farming, supplied the food for the state.
At the top: Emperor (highest position, but no political power)
Second in line: Shogun (actual ruler, had political power)
Third in line: Daimyo (large landowners)
Fourth in line: Samurai/Ninja (warriors loyal to Daimyo)
The rest: Peasants (3/4 of population), Merchants (lowest status but gradually gained influence), Artisans (made swords and armor for the Samurai class)
Compare it to medieval feudalism, very similar.
Emporer was at the top, although he could not control distant reigions of Japan so he relied on Nobles, whom he gave land in return for their support of his kingdom. Owning private land made noble families even stronger. They became wealthy from taxes and crops grown on their private estates(or shoen). They were somewhere near the top. These lords eventually became known as daimyo and their supporters (formerly vassals) became the samurai warriors(very highly respected). Later in the Middle ages a new system was developed. The daimyo and samurai belonged to the warrior class (shi) and were at the top. Beneath them came the farmers (no). The artisans (ko) came next - they were craftsmen who made swords and other things. near the bottom came merchants (sho). The lowest class was called eta and we basically outcasts. They lived in their own communities and functioned under the leadership of a headman. they did distasteful tasks like burial of the dead or collecting garbage.
