At first, it only cost a few dollars because you built it yourself-- in radio's very early days, the majority of people who had radios were hobbyists, and coming from amateur (ham) radio, they liked to build things. These early radios were not very attractive, but they got the job done. However, when radio expanded and became very popular in the mid 1920s, companies like RCA (Radio Corporation of America) and others mass-produced them and sold them at department stores. The prices varied. A basic, not very fancy model might cost about $15. But a beautiful radio set, situated in an attractive cabinet (something that looked like a nice piece of furniture), featuring the latest technological advances, might cost $120 or more.
In 1920 many households around the United States depended on a radio to provide them with the news and other important information. The price of radios in 1920 was on average $20.
