Road's historic significance as America's first and most important national highway.
The Burma Road supplied the Chinese who had been fighting the Japanese since 1937. When Japan enterred WW2 they cut the road by invading Burma, where supplies arrived. The Western Allies built a new road called the "Ledo Road" from India and also sent supplies by air over "The Hump" of the Himalayas. At present, the 690-km Yangon-Mandalay highway with motor road and railroad in parallel stands the most important and key transport link between Yangon and Mandalay, the second largest city of Myanmar .CHINA
1. Air power wasn't as strong as it is today and the Burma Road was used to resupply China (non-communist at the time & and an ally) in its fight against Japan. Later flyng over the hump to resupply China supplemented or took over the role from the Burma Road. 2. Japan was invading India through Burma. The British army stopped the advancing IJA at the battle of Imphal in India.
