He was a farmer and shepherd until he was 12 years old (1818). He then migrated to the city to study at school, while at the same time he became a domestic servant.
At age 28, he finished law school and became a lawyer. He then became a judge at age 35 (1841). From 1847 to 1851 he became governor of the state of Oaxaca. In 1853 he became exiled for opposing Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, working at a cigar factory for two years. In 1854 he helped depose Santa Anna and during 1857 he became president of the Supreme Court of Justice. In 1858 he became interim president of Mexico. In 1861 he was elected as president of Mexico, being reelected for several consecutive terms until his dead in 1872.
