The only failure of Ford was his pardon of Richard Nixon. I was honored to be his campaign chairman while a student at the University of Oklahoma in 1976.

I met both the President and his son, Jack. What a great experience! He was crucified unfairly for pardoning Nixon back then. We were in a recession, and the country had major challenges and over 75% of his time was spent talking to lawyers on both sides of the Watergate scandal. He knew that the country couldn't afford to have Nixon in a court of law and having it drag out for many more months along with appeals and so forth. Ford did the right thing by putting a quick end to this. He knew that politcally, he had probably lost the election in 1976, but he knew he did what was best for the country. He put country first over politcs! Nixon had phlebitis as it turned out and was very sick and was close to dying in the fall of 1974. Being forced to resigned was a huge humiliation for Nixon and suffered for it. I don't think the majority of the American people would have wanted to see him in prison.
