The Bow Street Runners were formed in 1750. The Metrololitan Police Act of 1859 set up an organised Police Force in London. They were known as Peelers or Bobbies after their founder Sir Robert Peel

They might be called constables, the Reeve of the Shire (Shire Reeve became Sheriff) the Public Watch, or the Public Guard. The oldest police force in the US is the Virginia State Capitol Police, which began in 1618 as the Public Guard at Jamestown VA.
