During the depression President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had the goal of getting people back to work, getting them fed and sheltered and fixing the economy. He came up with an idea to have the men (and some women) work on construction projects like building dams, roads and other things. He changed the gold standard (which to this day I think was a big mistake) in an attempt to fix the Federal Reserve. Laws about the stock exchange went into effect too. During World War 2 FDR's goals were to basically save the world. He first had to persuade the Americans to help Britain and France fight against the maniac Hitler. He had to deal with Japan's demands. When they attacked he put the US into the war to fight off Japan and Germany. He then worked closely with France, England and Russia to defeat the Nazis. He also had an idea to join forces with the Allies to create the United Nations. We owe it to FDR and Winston Churchill for their exhausting efforts to defeat our enemies. FDR did all that while he was seriously ill. He died fighting for our country so tiredly. He finally succumbed to a "stroke" (better medical word for it but I don't remember it right now) and died before Japan surrendered.
