Athens converted the cities of the Delian League, which it had led against the Persian Empire in the latter stage of the war, into an empire of its own, living high on the hog off the proceeds. Athens as a result became overconfident and aggressive, resulting in the Peloponnesian war with Sparta and its allies of the Peloponnesian League, which Athens lost and was stripped of its empire. During this war, Persia had its revenge, financing the Peloponnesian League fleet which won the war over Athens.
