Since the Babylonian Empire ceased to exist in 539 BCE, its contribution to the spread of Christianity can only be indirect. The Jewish diaspora began as a result of the Babylonian conquest of Judah, with some Jews choosing to remain in Babylon after the Return from Exile, as well as a large number of former refugees living in Egypt.

Whether or not Christianity really began in the Jewish diaspora, it certainly seems to have spread more quickly among the diaspora Jews than Palestinian Jews in Apostolic times. This facilitated the spread of Christianity among the gentiles of the Near East, allowing it to become a universal religion, rather than just a minor Jewish sect.
