The most famous document from US President, James Madison, was the Monroe Doctrine. The purpose was to make it clear that no new European adventures should be attempted in the Western Hemisphere. The doctrine had the support of the British Empire as it already had a healthy trade with the new Spanish republics. Britain also supported it as it there was a fear from both the US and Britain, that Russia might interfere from its North American base Russian Alaska.

The Monroe Doctrine is very long and difficult to read; it can be boiled down to two basic provisions. It declares that the Americas are no longer subject to European colonization and that existing colonies are fine, but the Europeans can't start any new ones.

The main provisions were to stop European nations, primarily GB, Fr, Russia, andSpain from acquiring territory on the N. Amer continent. Monroe and prior presidents believed the safety of the American people lied in having control over the continent w/ no foreigners closer than an ocean away. The US further wanted to save Latin America for our own conquest...but that wasn't put in writing, just what we did after the fact.
