Theodore Roosevelt Presidential achievements are impressive.

In foreign affairs he led us into the arena of international power politics, thrusting aside the American tradition of isolationism, while on the domestic scene, he reversed the traditional federal policy of laissez-faire ( It is generally understood to be a doctrine that maintains that private initiative and production are best allowed to roam free,) and sought to bring order, social justice, and fair dealings to American industry and commerce. In all his policies as Chief Executive, he expanded the powers and responsibilities of the Presidential office, establishing the model of the modern Presidency which has been followed by most of his successors in the White House.

Perhaps his greatest contribution was his work for conservation. During his tenure in the White House from 1901 to 1909, he designated 150 National Forests, the first 51 Federal Bird Reservations, 5 National Parks, the first 18 National Monuments, the first 4 National Game Preserves, and the first 21 Reclamation Projects. Altogether, in the seven-and-one-half years he was in office, he provided federal protection for almost 230 million acres, a land area equivalent to that of all the East coast states from Maine to Florida.

Aside from his conservation efforts, he "busted" trusts bringing the large corporations under the control of the people; he began the Panama Canal; he established the Department of Commerce and Labor; he negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War and thereby won the Nobel Peace Prize; he preached a "Square Deal" for all Americans, enabling millions to earn a living wage; he built up the Navy as the "Big Stick", thus establishing America as a major world power; he reduced the National debt by over $90,000,000; and he secured the passage of the Elkins Act and the Hepburn Act for regulation of the railroads, the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act for consumer protection, and the Federal Employers' Liability Act for Labor.

In addition, he successfully mediated international disputes over Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Morocco. He was the first world leader to submit a dispute to the Court of Arbitration at The Hague, and he was the first head of state to call for convening of what became the Second Hague Peace Conference at which he obtained for Latin American nations equal status with the rest of the world, and won the adoption of the Drago Doctrine, which outlawed the use of force in the collection of foreign debts.

Many of the policies he advocated during the Bull Moose years ( In August 1912 the national convention of the new Progressive Party met in Chicago, and nominated TR for President and Governor Hiram W. Johnson of California for Vice President. In November the Republicans for the first and only time in history came in third in both the popular and electoral vote for President. TR came in second, and because of the split in the normal Republican vote, Democrat Woodrow Wilson was elected) were adopted by Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt.

Much of what he achieved affects each and every American today and his name and personality have become part of the collective icon for what America stands for at its best.

"Of all the public men that I have known, on both sides of the Atlantic (and there are few that I have not known in the past thirty years), he stands out the greatest, and as the most potent influence for good upon the life of his generation."

Viscount Lee of Fareham, English statesman.

How tall was Eleanor Roosevelt?

She was taller than her husband Theodore Roosevelt who was 5'10. She was almost six feet tall at being 5'11 1/2".That is not entirely accurate. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was the niece of the twenty-sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt (her father Elliott Roosevelt was TR's brother). She was the wife of the thirty-second president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was also her distant cousin and shared her surname. (It is worth noting, however, that the presidents Roosevelt pronounced their names differently. Theodore Roosevelt pronounced his name ROOS-eh-velt, while Franklin Roosevelt pronounced it ROSE-uh-velt.)At 5'11, Mrs. Roosevelt was taller than her uncle Theodore, but shorter than her husband. FDR stood 6'2" when he ran for vice president in 1920. The following year, he was stricken with what was then thought to be polio myelitis, and thereafter was confined to a wheelchair.

Why is North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt National named after Theodore Roosevelt Park?

The North Dakota badlands were an important place in Theodore Roosevelt's life. It was while in the badlands that Roosevelt saw the degradation of the environment through human causes (cattle ranching and summer/winter of 1886-1887), and learned to respect and connect with common people. "I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience North Dakota," Roosevelt said.Roosevelt went on to become President of the United States and the world's leading land conservationist of all time. During his presidency, he conserved over 230,000,000 acres of land, 150 national forests, 18 national monuments, 51 federal bird refuges, and 5 national parks.http://www.nps.gov/thro/historyculture/theodore-roosevelt.htm
