Best Answer

In North America the cable used for wiring a hot water tank is two conductor #12. It is rated at 20 amps. This is for a normal 4000 watt tank. Larger wattage tanks will of course take a larger size conductor due to the greater current draw. These tanks require a 240 volt supply. To find the amperage of your tank use this equation; Amps = Watts/volts

What happens when the cold and hot water pipes are reversed on the hot water tank?

You will get warm instead of hot water. There is a tube inside the tank on the cold side that goes to the bottom of the tank and the hot comes directly from the top. Reverse them and you are going to get the cold water that settles to the bottom of the tank. It will not hurt the tank or anything, it just makes for poor hot water.
