first i would need to know what is clicking to be able to tell you what is not happeneing. what kind of car. if its a Ford there is two selinoids and either one could be the problem. most of the time either you have a broken or dirty connection. i just had a ford f150 with the battery cable to the starter was broken off and neeeded a new connector and put back on cost about 3 dollars for the connector. more info next time will help speed things up.
That clicking sound could be the sign of a weak, if not a totally discharged battery. Or, it could indicate a defective solenoid in the starter, or a defective bendix spring in the starter. If you are convinced that the battery is not the cause, I'd focus on the starter.
Low battery voltage will cause clicks, and it is also possible that the starter solenoid is too worn in which case replacing the whole starter is best.
Low battery, bad connection or starter.
your battery is dead or the starter solenoid
A bad starter. A loose connection @ the terminal ends-the battery cables-the starter solonoid-IF IT has Rubber covers around the battery ends corrosion from battery acid could cause it.EVEN a bad ground on the engine from the battery 2 the frame.(battery cables) The battery cable ends could be corroded and should be cleaned. The next step would be to check the starter selenoid and then the starter.
try charging the battery before you replace the starter
Corroded battery terminals, defective battery, or starter.Corroded battery terminals, defective battery, or starter.
starter
Dead battery, corroded or loose battery or starter cables, defective starter or starter solenoid, loose ground connection.
Sounds like the starter solenoid is bad also Check the battery cables for looseness and/or corrosion A weak battery or coroded, loose,or broken cables on/from battery to starter or engine ground will cause a starter selinoid to click without turning the starter. Less often, the windings in the starter or the brushes may be worn out, requiring a replacement. Salt deposit or corossion on the starter lugs also may rob power to the starter. It is VERY IMPORTANT to remove the negative battery cable first, before cleaning, removing or servicing the positive cable on the battery or the starter to avoid possible arcing or shorting battery voltage.
does all your lights go out when you start it you may have a lose ground on your battery might should clean posts. your starter was probably not brand new the solenoid may be bad also
Turn on your headlights and try to sart the engine. If the lights go out the battery is probably bad. The contacts on the starter solonoid don't cause it to click.
