In order:
Bad cylinder,
Check compression on all cylinders, low compression on one cylinder indicates failure point. No or low compression points to the affected cylinder.
bad fuel injector, use ohmeter to check injector coil. Run a can of injector cleaner through the unit.
Bad coil pack, pull plug wire on each cylinder of running engine, do this quickly to eliminate chance of damaging catalytic unit. Note RPM drop on each cylinder. No drop you've found the suspect.
bad sparkplug, pull plugs and inspect
bad wires, you get the drill
bad ECM unit. not common but $$$$
Be careful playing around high voltage, if you don't know what you're doing take it to a shop.

You didn't say what size engine you have. But I would have to say that it is a V-8 engine. The sensor will be bolted into the passenger side of the engine BEHIND the starter. You Will Have To REMOVE the starter.
My first stop would be the dealership. If you do not want to do that you could go to chevy.com to check out the Chevy Suburban. They would have all the info you need to make your decision.
If the 1999 Suburban noise is a sort of loud banging noise, the problem could be that the engine have jumped time. Jumping time would cause the noise and jerking in the engine.
