USSR would have expanded it's borders anyway. Hitler was psychotic, irrational, and lacked true military training or ability. He burned the books in the streets that included history of Russia that clearly states that Russia has always successfully repelled all invaders due to harsh winters, viking genetic background of slavic people who are very capable fighters, resources and vastness of Russia. USSR under Stalin was a highly controlled and disciplined country. Only weak troops were positioned in the west. The elite troops capable of fighting in any weather were secretly positioned in Siberia and included T-34 tanks, the best in the world, made from secret, at the time, mix of cast iron, magnesium and other metals creating the toughest alloy in the world. These armored divisions were in the east of Russia to fight Japanese in case they attacked. Stalin did not worry about Hitler. And when top spies in Japan disclosed that Japan wasn't going to attack USSR, Stalin then send all those elite Siberia armored divisions and heavily armored aircraft, to the west, which resulted in total defeat of Nazi Germany. Soviet Union later fell apart because relatively wealthy Russia had to support weaker and poorer republics that were part of USSR. The strain proved to be too much, and Russia decided it was better off taking care of itself. As of today, Russian GDP is higher and more stable than most of the former republics of USSR. It is nearly impossible for me to comprehend a history without a war between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Both were highly militaristic. The Soviets were just as aggressive as Germany in expanding their borders, running them right up against the central European region dominated by Germany. There was a many centuries old loathing of Russia by the Germans, probably dating back to the horrible attacks coming from the Huns and Mongols a thousand years prior. Both were led by ideological, hate filled dictators, determined to slaughter all who opposed them. Germany, lacking the massive resources of Russia, decided on a pre-emptive attack, before the Russians could gather more strength. The timing of the attack was near perfect. The Russians were caught with their military strength forward, yet in less than desirable formation. The Russian military leadership was decimated from purges and political promotion. Meanwhile German forces were highly motivated, well organized, brilliantly led, and finely equipped. Almost nothing on the western front could have prevent a German/Russian war. Had Britain decided to cooperate with Germany, save her empire, and stop the war in the west, Germany would still have attacked Russia. Had Britain/France held on in 1940 by some miracle and forced a stalemate on the western front as in 1914, then Russia would have quickly entered the conflict in order to secure Poland and the Balkans for her empire. There is almost no scenario that can avoid this conflict. Germany's hope was always to seize the bulk of European Russia, thereby defeating the British blockade which did so much to defeat Germany in 1914-1918. German control of Russia up to the Volga would have filled almost all of Germany's mineral, fuel, and agricultural needs. It is also possible that such a conquest would have caused a collapse of the Soviet system with a more friendly regime replacing it. As such, Germany would then have had direct land contact with the Japanese empire and could have created and almost impenetrable empire.

How long did Romans occupy Ireland?

They never occupied Ireland although there is a suggestion they were looking at the possibilty of doing so. There are Roman artefacts found around Dublin and the Town of Chester (then Deva) was one of the biggest forts in the whole empire. The only reason for this would be the conquest of Ireland. The Empire fell into civil war and then collapsed before they made a move on Ireland.
