When speaking of Relativity, people mostly think of Albert Einstein. However, Relativity was experimented by Galileo Galilei first. So when speaking of Relativity, it helps to be specific: Einsteinian Relativity or Galilean Relativity.
I don't think the theory changed anything. In classical mechanics, energy is conserved; in the theory of relativity, energy is also conserved. Also note that there are two "theories of relativity"; you may want to clarify which one you are talking about. In any case, it is my understanding that energy is conserved in both cases.

After 1905 he was a respected physicist within the science community. After Arthur Eddington claimed, in 1919, that Einstein's general relativity theory was correct, Einstein became, literally overnight, the most famous scientist in the world.
