The former Confederate States were readmitted to the Union in various years after the end of the Civil War. Georgia first rejoined the Union on June 25, 1868, along with six other states on the same day. However, the United States rejected Georgia shortly thereafter due to the state's refusal to accept the 15th Amendment. The Amendment gives all male citizens, regardless of color, the right to vote. The Union permanently re-re-admitted Georgia on July 15, 1870, when the state finally accepted the 15th Amendment.
