The only thing you could do at the post about three hundred years ago was to buy Stamps & other postal stationery.

Since 1881, Post offices started accepting Money Orders, thereby facilitating easy transfer of funds from one place to another, for the first time. This was indeed considered to be a great revolution then, since people used to send money earlier by cutting the notes into two halves and posting one halves first & the second halves only after hearing from the recipient ! The recipient would then have to paste each & every note together once again before putting the money to any use !

Slowly these Post Offices started performing many additional functions like those of the Small Banks, which was vital for the development of the Rural Areas (where Commercial Banks were hesitant to set shop).

Today, though the advent of emails & social media have greatly reduced the role & need of the Post office for Communication, the Rural areas in most parts of the World are still dependent to a large extent on the Post Office. In rural India, the Village Post Master is still considered a very revered figure, next only to the Village School Teacher.

World over, the Governments should come forward to modernize the post offices & strengthen their role in economic development through innovative programs, rather than aiming to close them down as is being contemplated in UK.
