ANSWER #1: Dark brown horses usually have a lighter brown coloured muzzle and underbelly , whereas black horses are completely jet black and don't have lighter areas. ANSWER #2: In the horse world, terminologies related to horse color can seem quite confusing. :D To make it easier, just remember that there are actually VERY FEW truly BLACK horses. Most "black" horses have brown on their body somewhere (usually the muzzle/nose & belly as stated above). Even though a horse may appear to be jet black, if they have ANY brown on their body ANYWHERE, then they are classified as a brown horse. A black is just that - totally black with no brown. (White markings such as socks or stockings on the legs or stars or blazes on the face are okay. They would still be classified as a black as long as there is no brown)
