Fort Sumter.
The U.S. Civil War began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina.

In a more detailed sense the Confederacy recognized that a state of war existed between themselves and the Union in May of 1861. The US Supreme Court ruled that a state of war did not exist until July of 1861.

The bombardment by the Confederacy of Fort Sumter led directly to the armed conflict commonly referred to as the US Civil War. After the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to serve three months to end the South;s rebellion. This prompted four other Southern states to join the Confederacy. Small conflicts began soon after. By July of 1861, it was clear that a war was on.
