LEGO was losing popularity with its customers in the Bionicle toy line. At the time it was shut down, the purchase rate of the products was at an all time low. This may be because that no one wants to buy mistaka tahu which is basically just about the same toy as the one that came out ten years ago. Also, when the economy is bad, the first thing people cut off on is entertainment. Lego just couldn't make enough money to make continuing the toyline possible.
The developers at lego created a new, more flexible building system that does not work very well with bionicle parts. Lego decided to cease manufacturing bionicle products and began using the new system in a new toyline (HeroFactory) in hopes that new customers will buy it.
While there are no more BIONICLE products, bionicle is not dead. Greg Farshtey still updates the website with new stories, and every now and then the lego team adds new wallpapers, music, etc, and games.
The spring 2009 sets are already out everywhere, however the summer sets have yet to be released.
